ETUDE CRITIQUE 1. Stephen Lewis vient de présenter ce 10 juin 2021 un thèse intitulée "Vikings in Aquitaine and their connections, ninth to the early eleventh century", un travail remarquable et monumental de 871 pages dont l'auteur affirme l'exhaustivité et l'objectivité. A l'issue de son étude, sa conclusion est formelle : il n'y a "probablement" pas eu d'installation scandinave durable en Gascogne. Evidemment, ce travail universitaire est appelé à devenir la réponse officielle à mes travaux "romancés" qui mettent en avant l'existence d'une entité politique scandinave en Aquitaine. Il est donc important que je mette en lumière les insuffisances et les approximations de ce travail de référence pour calmer l'enthousiasme et les ardeurs de mes détracteurs qui pourraient manquer de lucidité à la lecture de cette thèse. Il s'agit du premier article d'une série de quatre.

CRITICAL STUDY 1. Stephen Lewis has just presented his thesis entitled "Vikings in Aquitaine and their connections, ninth to the early eleventh century", a remarkable and monumental work of 871 pages whose author asserts its exhaustiveness and objectivity. At the end of his study, his conclusion is formal: there was "probably" no lasting Scandinavian settlement in Gascony. Obviously, this academic work is destined to become the official response to my 'romanticized' work 1 which puts forward the existence of a Scandinavian political entity in Aquitaine. It is therefore important that I highlight the shortcomings and approximations of this reference work in order to calm the enthusiasm and ardour of my detractors who might lack lucidity when reading this thesis. This is the first article in a series of four. It concerns the first mentions of Scandinavians in Aquitaine. The second will concern the 'fictitious' invasion of Gascony, the third the evidence of the Scandinavian presence forgotten by Stephen Lewis and the last will concern the end of Scandinavian Gascony which Stephen tells us never happened. 1 Stephen Lewis writes "many historical-novel-like imaginings of Joël Supéry".

ETUDE CRITIQUE 2. Depuis quinze ans, plusieurs historiens m'accusent d'avoir fantasmé la présence viking en Gascogne, mais aucun n'a véritablement accepté la discussion, c'est normal : aucun universitaire n'ayant jamais étudié la période, personne n'avait idée de ce qu'il s'était passé dans la région. Les choses pourraient changer : ce 10 juin 2021, Stephen Lewis vient de présenter une thèse qui est appelée à devenir la version officielle de l'université. Jusqu'à présent, je ne pouvais que me défendre, désormais, je peux critiquer la position officielle qui est incarnée par cette thèse.
Stephen Lewis considère que l'invasion de la Gascogne par les Vikings relève du mythe.  Nous expliquons dans cet article les éléments qui nous paraissent avoir été négligés par l'auteur.. Il s'agit du deuxième volet d'une série de quatre consacrés à la critique de cette thèse présentée le 10  juin 2021  à Caen.

CRITICAL STUDY 2 -  "As a rather critical, but perhaps not hyper-critical, historian, I am forced to conclude that there is simply no reliable evidence of a significant and long-lasting presence of Northmen in Bayonne or elsewhere in Gascony in the ninth century (or for that matter in the tenth century), nor of their devastation of almost all the towns of Gascony." Lewis wrote that in a thesis presented on June 10, 2021. 873 pages. Of, course, I disagree.

ETUDE CRITIQUE 3. Il existe plusieurs documents évoquant ou suggérant une présence scandinave en Gascogne. Stephen Lewis en étudie certains qu'il rejette et en oublie d'autres. Du coup, "en l'absence de documents" probants, il conclut qu'une présence scandinave n'est pas démontrée. Evidemment, nous contestons la manière dont l'auteur traite ces sources et expliquons pourquoi.

CRITICAL STUDY 3. There are several documents that mention or suggest a Scandinavian presence in Gascony. Stephen Lewis examines some of these and rejects others. As a result, "in the absence of documentary evidence", he concludes that there is no evidence for a Norse presence. We question the author's treatment of these sources and explain why cannot agree with his conclusions.

ETUDE CRITIQUE 4. Les sources gasconnes évoquent un dernier combat contre les Vikings qui aurait eu lieu vers 982 dans la plaine landaise. Il y a trois lectures possibles de cette bataille. Soit il s'agit d'une bataille de libération mettant fin à la domination scandinave, soit il s'agit d'un simple raid repoussé, soit il s'agit d'une bataille mythique complètement inventée. Stephen Lewis ayant rejeté la possibilité d'une présence scandinave, sa position est sans surprise. Nous contestons bien évidemment la manière dont il écarte les sources évoquant cette bataille.

CRITICAL STUDY, Part 4. Gascon sources mention a last battle against the Vikings which took place around 982 on the Landes plain. There are three possible interpretations of this battle. Either it is a battle of liberation putting an end to Scandinavian domination, or it is a simple raid that was repulsed, or it is a completely invented mythical battle. Stephen Lewis has rejected the possibility of a Norse presence, so his position is unsurprising. We do, of course, take issue with the way he dismisses the sources that mention this battle.
